Microbiology Laboratory Service Guide
A quick guide for collecting and submitting specimens to the Microbiology Laboratory.
Quick Start
- Check the patient name, HN, and request form details.
- Collect the correct specimen from the correct site and in sufficient volume.
- Use the correct container or transport medium.
- Close the container securely, label it clearly, and submit it promptly.
Submission Checklist
- Specimen type matches the request form.
- Container is intact, leak-free, and tightly closed.
- Label is legible and does not cover the Hemoculture barcode.
- Specimen volume is sufficient.
- All required request documents are attached.

Common Rejection Reasons
- Leaking, broken, dirty, or improperly closed container
- Unclear label or mismatch with the request form
- Incorrect specimen type or insufficient volume
- A sputum sample that is actually saliva
If a specimen does not meet the criteria, staff will record the rejection and advise the submitting unit to correct the problem or recollect the specimen.
